Crease: Chapter 5 (Different Horizons)

At the entrance of the Deepspace Tunnel, the DAA's patrol team and the Farspace Fleet briefly glides through their respective airspaces. They pass each other like two ships in the night.

“Today’s patrol mission follows the same protocol as always. Probe the shallow layers of the Deepspace Tunnel, and report back on the latest terrestrial magnetic field conditions.”

After giving one final rundown of the mission objectives to the team, Gideon notices his junior colleague in the corner. He just made it through the probationary period, and his nerves are practically written all over his face. Gideon smiles cheerfully and pats him reassuringly on his back. “You’ll get better at handling this with a couple more missions. Everyone started out the same way too.”

The junior colleague nods his head, and he begins position his limbs at specific angles in a series of strange poses. Whether he's doing this from excessive nerves or otherwise is hard to tell.

“What are you doing? What kind of technique is that?” Gideon says with furrowed brows. The sentiment of “I don’t understand” is written plainly on his face.

“These are the most common poses seen on the Heartthrob’s plastic figurine posts! Rumour has it that you’ll get the Heartthrob’s protective blessing if you pose like them before a mission!”

Gideon looks like he's about to say something, but the overhead announcement reminds them that it’s time to depart. With an unreadable smile, Gideon imitates the junior’s poses, causing the other team members to laugh. Their footsteps are noticeably lighter on the way out.

At the entrance of the Deepspace Tunnel, the DAA’s patrol unit briefly crosses paths with the Farspace Fleet, gliding through their respective airspaces.

Gideon leads the navigation with the trainee aircraft. His gaze is fixed at the very front of the Farspace Fleet, where a warship is being steered by the newly-appointed Colonel.

They used to joke with each other about the future; that if the both of them ever found themselves leading a fleet of trainees towards the same destination, then they’d compete to see whose students could fly better and faster. In the present day, the DAA carries research data towards Earth, while the Farspace Fleet pushes deeper into the unknown regions of the Deepspace Tunnel.

Like two ships passing in the night, they head in opposite directions from the other.
